We have all heard the adage, the kitchen is the heart of the home. This is definitely the case in this beautiful home with its blend of cottage and modern Scandinavian styles. We drew inspiration from my client's Scandinavian history and the character of their 100 + year old farmhouse with this addition and remodel. I'm so pleased with how it transformed this space!
The Finishes
With a play on textures, smooth and rough and colors wit warm and cool contrast We used a soft warm white, SW White Flour, for the walls and cabinetry and contrasted it with a stunning dark navy island at the center. Black leathered granite around the perimeter adds texture and contrast to the smooth white cabinetry and the butcher-block island adds some much needed warmth against the cool blue island. And did I mention this flooring? It's a beautiful engineered hardwood that we carried throughout the dining and kitchen spaces and it does adds so much warmth too! You can't beat the look of the real thing!
I am in love with the artisan square tiles we used in a brick pattern on the backsplash. They add so much depth with their varied whites but it's still subtle enough that it doesn't distract from the showstopper in the island.
We used white appliances throughout so they blended beautifully in with the cabinetry and were easy on the budget. We also employed one of my favorite designer tricks to hide a full size fridge by stealing some space from the laundry room with a little jut out. From this side of the kitchen you would never know! It's one of my favorite designer tricks for those who still want the depth of a full size refrigerator but don't want it to feel like the monster overtaking the walkway.
The Lighting
Lighting is everything in a space! It's right up there with the hardware in enhancing the overall feel and look of your home. When we found these polished nickel sconces I was over the moon. We wanted something more striking to draw your eye to the beautiful windows and view outside and these from Pottery Barn did just the trick! They add that little bit of gloss while still being warm and I love the curve of the arm holding the tapered shade.
On the island we wanted to do something with a low profile. My client's are tall people, which I can definitely relate to, and so they didn't want something hanging in their way at the island. And so we opted for a semi flush mount light in the same polished nickel finish but with a glass shade so the light spread across the ceiling. The layered lighting came together beautifully.
Clever Design Solutions
This space is no joke when it comes to function. With features ranging from the pull-out trash in the island to the the microwave alcove every detail was thought out. One of my favorite features is the hidden pantry doors disguised as this tall cabinet hutch that perfectly mirrors the refrigerator cabinet on the opposite side of the range. It's easily accessible and the mess can be hidden away easily so no one would ever know!
This beautiful farmhouse got a huge upgrade when we added this kitchen! I can hardly believe the transformation and I love how well it's working for my clients and their family now. If you haven't seen it already, be sure to look at the Mud Room + Laundry space, the neighboring Dining Room and don't forget their Primary Bathroom too!
